David Durenberger senatorial files, 1954-1996 (bulk 1978-1994).

Papers of a 3-term (1978-1995) Republican U.S. senator from Minnesota. Dave (David F.) Durenberger (b.1934), a lawyer, corporate official, and executive secretary to Minnesota Governor Harold LeVander (1967-1971), won a special 1978 election to the Senate to fill out the uncompleted term of the late Hubert H. Humphrey (D-Minn.). The collection is particularly strong in its documentation of health care reform issues. Includes voting records, bills, briefing books, news clippings, audio and video cassettes, press releases, speeches, newsletters, schedules, hearing transcripts, polling data, correspondence and memoranda, reports and government publications, and a small sampling of grant/project files. The bulk of the collection consists of legislative assistants' subject files documenting Durenberger's work in agriculture; business, taxes, and trade; environment, energy, and natural resources; foreign relations (including defense and intelligence); the judiciary; transportation and infrastructure; and health policy and health care reform issues. There is information about election campaigns, opponents, and fund raising; ethics investigations into Durenberger's activities; partisan politics; Governor Harold LeVander; and his alma mater, St. John's University (Collegeville, Minn.). Correspondents include Durneberger staffers; federal, state, and local government officials; constituents; congressional colleagues; administration officials; businesses and industry groups; lobbyists; and Durenberger's attorneys.
